In-Cabin Pet Policy

If your small dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Air Malta pet policy to travel in-cabin, you will need an approved airline pet carrier.

You must notify Air Malta that you are traveling with a pet. Reservations for your pet must be made through their call center.

Pets cannot weigh in excess of 22 pounds (10 kg) including the carrier and the measurements should be no larger than 15.7"L x 13.4"W x 8"H (40 cm x 34 cm x 20 cm). Soft sided carriers should be able to compress to this height without crowding your pet when it is laying down. Your pet must have room to stand up and turn around in the carrier.

You are permitted to carry 2 pets in one carrier as long as their is adequate room for both of them. One carrier is permitted per adult passenger. Guide dogs are permittted to fly for free and owners should contact Air Malta for a reservation at least 7 days in advance. Note that guide dogs can only travel on the first leg of a multi-stop route.

Cost is €70

All relevant pet passport information as well as a health certificate must be presented at check-in.

Checked Baggage/Air Cargo Pet Policy

Air Malta offers checked baggage and cargo services for small dogs, cats, rabbits, hares, ferrets and birds up to 32 kg. Animals will be flown in the cargo hold of the aircraft which has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin. TIP: Be sure to tell the Captain of the aircraft that your pet is flying in the cargo hold so that they can be sure to keep the temperature at the proper level. Animals Allowed

Small dogs, cats, rabbits, hares, ferrets and birds. If the weight of the crate and the pet exceeds 32 kg, it must fly as air cargo.

Note that pets will not be transported as checked baggage in or out of the United Kingdom, Malta or Libya. Also, pets will not be permitted to transit through Malta.

Reservations

Reservations should be made at least 5 days prior to departure.

Check-In

Pets should be checked in no later than 3 hours prior to flight departure.

Forms

Rabbits, hares and birds must be accompanied with current health certificate and a special form must be submitted. For cats and dogs, a special form must be submitted. All required documentation for the destination country must be available.

Cost

Cost for checked baggage ranges from €70-150 depending on the size of your pet. Air cargo fees can be obtained by contacting Air Malta Cargo Department.

Crate Requirements

One pet is allowed per crate and one crate per passenger. Maximum height is 100 cm.

If your dog or cat is traveling in the cargo section, it must fly in a pet crate that is IATA compliant. Learn more about IATA compliant pet crates.

We also suggest that you consider crate hardware for your pet's crate as more airlines are requiring it. Once you receive your crate, you will need to acclimate your pet to it before traveling.
